About your LabTAP MIT Research Visit
Below is some information about what to expect during your visit to MIT to participate in the LabTAP research study.
Arriving at MIT
Our lab is located in Cambrdige, MA near the Kendall Square T stop on the Red Line. Our research team will send you a detailed e-mail about your visit, including where to meet, a phone number for the researcher, and information about what to expect.
Getting Started
-
Meet the Researcher
A researcher will meet you at the entrance to our building. The exact location will be specified in your visit confirmation e-mail.
-
Review the Research Process
A researcher will review what the study visit entails and you will have a chance to ask any questions you might have.
-
Consenting
If you decide to participate, you will be asked to review and sign a consent form, which is a document that confirms that you voluntarily agreed to be in the research study and understand what it entails. Even if you sign the form, you can still decide not to participate at anytime during the session, for any reason.
The Research Visit
-
EEG Setup
After you sign the consent form, a researcher will help you prepare for the recording. First they will place a stretchy cap on your head. Then they will put small amounts of water-based gel in the holes in the cap. Then they will put sensors called “electrodes” into the cap. The gel allows the electrodes to make contact with your scalp.
-
EEG Recording
Next, you will be asked to sit in a comfortable chair inside a quite recording booth. While you are in the booth, the researcher will record your brain activity. EEG recording is quiet and painless - the electrodes passively record the electrical activity that your brain makes while you listen to sounds.
After the EEG recording, you will remove the cap and have a chance to wipe the gel off with a clean towel provided by the researchers. When you get home the gel will rinse out easily in the shower. Some people might like to bring a cap to wear on their way home. -
Behavioral Assessment Session
After the EEG recording, you will go with the researcher to a different room where you will be asked to solve some puzzles, answer questionnaires, and do some listening tasks on a computer. At the end of this session, the researcher will wrap up and provide compensation.
